Sustainability and Innovation Management

Figures are changing. Values remain.
Sustainability & Innovation Management

“Sustainability” is one of those words that you just want to dust off and polish up. Its extreme overuse actually makes such a valuable term a kind of label that is now even applied to plastic devices. At BCC, we refer to its essential meaning: that companies can and want to provide ecological and social as well as economic services. People expect companies to provide a holistic balance sheet of entrepreneurial activity and improvement.

Through many different projects we help companies in a wide variety of industries to publish such a balance sheet and improve it bit by bit. When the term is understood correctly, sustainability is a driver of innovation. It has the power to renew and expand business models.

Sustainability is also a driver of change. There is hardly any other concept that unleashes so much power and motivation within an organization to find better solutions and launch them on the market. Corporate sustainability is therefore no luxury. It is risk management, innovation driver and cost reduction program all in one.

Innovation in Industrialized Society

There are lots of demands – and answers too.
Innovation in Industrialized Society

No question about it – there are lots of demands, even contradictory ones. Companies are expected to be able to simultaneously continue improving customers’ level of comfort, but without creating risks and follow-up costs. Consumers want top-quality goods that do not have a negative impact on production; they want low prices and local value creation, immediate availability and logistics that don’t harm the environment. Companies have understood this and are working to achieve these goals. Business models and processes are being reviewed and further developed. New products and services help to reduce the ecological footprint.

Innovation is the joker in the deck: Without new technical processes and materials, it is impossible to decrease consumption of resources, nor can there be an energy transition or intelligent infrastructure in our cities.

Technology is not part of the problem but part of the solution. It is time to raise a self-confident voice. Based on our many years of industrial experience, we support companies in developing and communicating their sustainability strategies. We also moderate processes to further develop business models and for innovation management purposes.

Active Management of Stakeholder Dialogues

No surprises please.
Stakeholder Dialogues

Developing new and smart solutions takes time. This applies to their implementation that much more. The many company stakeholders, however, are often impatient. Own employees, civil groups, politicians and the public at large – all of these groups clearly express their expectations. New standards such as the United Nations Global Compact, the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, those of CDP, SRI and other institutions have been created in recent years.

Such standards challenge companies to take positions. The large range of expectations must be managed, future developments anticipated and their

impact on the company in question assessed. BCC works industry- and company-oriented to crystalize relevant issues. We help to establish positions which can be employed to increase companies’ capacity for dialogue and utilize their existing potential.

Sustainability Reporting

“And yet another report” – let’s get some added value.
Sustainability Reporting

More and more companies provide information on how they develop their sustainable corporate values, even beyond their actual business objectives. Why do they do this? Because they have understood that information on financial performance and number of jobs does not answer all questions. And because they have understood that customers, business partners, regulators and social groups demand more answers than in the past. For example, answers to the questions of what conditions we are creating today that the next generation will have to use for its economic activity. Or what we are doing for an increasingly efficient utilization of resources and their renewal. Or how we manage our supply chain and treat our suppliers in other parts of the world. This form of reporting is still voluntary.

But the international trend to more transparency and accountability is becoming bigger and bigger. The EU is preparing a directive which will require all companies with more than 500 staff and a balance sheet total of more than €20 million or net sales of €40 million to provide information on the sustainability of their services. Now is the time to get started and we can help you do so. From the first sustainability report to a GRI 4.0 A+ level audited report: We develop, write and publish your texts.

Management System and Controlling

You can only manage what you measure.
Management System and Controlling

The scope and quality of sustainability management are determined by the core business areas and ambition level of company management. For a successful implementation of a company’s mission statement and strategy at an operational level you have to win over the employees and steer development. We help companies to develop and implement a customized management system – both at organizational as well as technical level. To this end, we also use DIN 26.000, for which we together with the audit company Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) jointly developed components to implement sustainability in companies. These include staff training and the evaluation of company performance.

Our auditors and our SustainablePerformance software tool, which already complies with GRI 4.0 reporting standard requirements, ensure a high degree of efficiency in setting up and processing management systems. This simplifies work, particularly for operational units.

By the way: There is hardly any company that has to start at zero for a sustainability management system. A large range of quality, security or environmental management systems are already available. They can be integrated and used to manage cost efficiency. Let us help you get started from where you are.
